It was a chilly one this week, getting out of bed on a Saturday morning isn’t getting any easier especially as the temperatures have dropped. But, to keep going for my weekly goals I have to get myself up and get myself going so that is exactly what I did. Having failed last week to continue improving my time I knew I had to pull it out the bag, I wasn’t prepared to come home feeling deflated having not given it my all.
I wrapped up warm and jogged to the start giving me a chance to warm up before I had to remove the many layers I had wrapped up in. I have to admit, once I was there I really wasn’t feeling it – I knew my aim was for under 25mins and I didn’t know if I had it in me, I am pretty sure these negative feelings don’t help. I had noticed last week I was 2nd in my age category, this fuelled my fire to get myself a 1st in my age category within the next 8 weeks – always something to aim for.
Down to the cold weather (I am assuming), there was definitely less people in attendance than normal which means I got a better start without getting caught up behind people. The first mile felt relatively good (I’m not sure I would go as far as saying I was enjoying myself….) but my breathing was as controlled as I could expect for the pace and my legs felt fine. It was in the second mile I began to struggle, my mind was telling me I couldn’t continue at this pace (I know I can, my heartrate was fine and I have done it quicker than this before!) and that was it – my breathing was all over the place I almost felt panicky. If it wasn’t for my coach being just a few steps ahead encouraging me along I would most definitely have slowed, maybe even walked or stopped. I also had some great encouragement from other Tiptree members and this hugely helped me sort myself out. A few deep breaths, tell myself I can do it, get the breathing under control and keep the legs going.
By the time I got to the end I was knackered, a few words possibly escaped my mouth which I best not repeat right now and my time – 25mins 02secs….. Not only that but I was just behind (4 seconds to be precise) 1st in my age category!! I gave it my all and yes it’s frustrating that I didn’t get my target(s) but at least this week I really tried and I guess there is always next week….
