I’m officially in Saltmarsh75 training 😳💩. The first training run took place today, we did 12ish miles along the sea wall starting at Steeple and finishing in Maldon. This is by far the craziest thing I have ever considered doing!! It was a very hard training run, however I have already learnt a few things:
Lesson 1 – if you have not run for a week and have been unwell don’t be cocky enough to think you can just crack out a 12 miler in boiling hot temperatures without feeling rough afterwards 🤦🏻♀️
Lesson 2 – if its going to be a scorcher of a day ☀️ consider amending your plans accordingly and perhaps look for a route which will benefit from some shaded areas.
Lesson 3 – a hydration pack is a lot more comfortable that a waist water belt. After using my new one for the first time today (review to follow), I can tell you that I really benefitted from being able to carry more fluid with me and although it was sweaty it was worth it for today’s run.
Lesson 4 – doing this training with friends is essential. Without Coach Robbo today I don’t think I would have made it round, the approach of run / walk between visual points really worked and I think this is something to keep in mind when things start to get tough. I love running with others, I like the chat, the laughs and the support we all give each other.
Lesson 5 – I can eat shot blocks and tangtastic haribo without any shituations 👍🏼
Lesson 6 – this is going to hurt. A lot.
Now, I didn’t have a great time of it today – I was feeling rough, trying to keep my fluids up and needing a lot of comfort breaks. I did enjoy about the first half of this run which is a little worrying as that was only 5 / 6 miles and there is a hell of a long way to go….. I also felt twinges in the knee which is a real worry for me. I know this is probably down to not stretching enough over the last week so I will ensure I pick this up again next week. I have huge concerns for this challenge, believe me its going to be the hardest/craziest thing I have tried to accomplish but I’ve gotta believe that #thisgirlcan
